In 1925, Rilke paused to look at the small gouaches by a little-known artist at the Kunsthalle in Bern. He took several of them back to Muzot, compared them to Japanese haiku, and dedicated a poem to her the following year. A hundred years later, the Fondation Rilke is opening its studio collection and revealing to the public the work of Sophy Giauque (1887–1943), a painter from Vaud who was celebrated during her lifetime but later almost completely forgotten.
